🏊♀️Deep dive: How to grow on LinkedIn (using the algorithm as your springboard)
|
With its large user base (over 900 million members 🤯), LinkedIn is a no-brainer for anyone who wants to grow an audience for their career or business. Beyond that, however, LinkedIn offers specific elements that make creating on the platform more than worthwhile: - An algorithm that offers a clear path to growth
-
A specific audience – as one of the only social networks with a clear target audience of Professionals.
- A suite of tools designed for creators like Newsletters, Audio Events, and Livestreams.
However, a large user base means you have lots of competition. So, how can you stand out? Follow these steps: -
Choose a niche to create for: Picking a niche is an essential part of growth on LinkedIn. This is because of how the LinkedIn algorithm works – content MUST be relevant to whoever sees it. The best way to make that relevant content? By sticking to a niche.
-
Switch to Creator Mode: You'll get a Follow button, the option to highlight your content on your profile, Newsletters, Audio Events, improved discoverability and analytics, and more.
- Optimize your LinkedIn profile with a good profile picture that shows your face, a headline that highlights your niche, a header that acts as a billboard with the key things you want people to know about you and a summary in your About section that shows your personality.
- Build community by making connections
: Strive to have at least 501 connections to start to give the impression that you’re well-connected. Bonus Tip: When sending a connection request, add a note introducing yourself and why you’d like to connect with the person in question.
-
Publish content consistently: The more you share, the better LinkedIn will theoretically understand you and push your content to whoever likely wants to see your posts – this is how it's algorithm works.
|
And speaking of publishing content and the LinkedIn algorithm – the team behind the platform opened up about how it works and their reveal and advice boils down to three core elements: Relevance, Expertise, and Engagement. -
Relevance: The relevance of your posts to a distinct audience (your niche)
- Expertise: Your expertise in your content’s subject area
- Engagement: The presence of "meaningful comments" from people who have historically shown interest in similar conversations.
Since the algorithm cares more about getting your content in front of the right people, you can be assured that you’ll grow as long as you optimize your posts and keep up your engagement through comments and replies. As a creator, you should aim to design content that not only appeals to a specific audience but also underscores your expertise and encourages genuine engagement. Here’s how:
Start treating LinkedIn like you would a work conference. You’re there to: - give a keynote presentation (share expert content) and
- network with people (engage and make new connections)
Your presentation should: - be relevant to the conference and its attendees (your niche and audience) and
-
provide as much value to your audience in the time you’re allotted (the three seconds you have to stop someone from scrolling)
The best part: nothing's too obscure for LinkedIn. If your passion is building kitchens in Middle Eastern architecture and that’s what you choose to write about, the algorithm will make sure the right people see it. |
