Before we get started… Who am I? Gizmodo got snarky about me and now I’m not sure! 😆

I have had a wild couple of weeks. I had the best time at Glastonbury. Then I blew my son’s mind at WWE Smackdown. And this week back at work has been insane. The Threads launch turned into a media circus with me popping up on TV all over the place. My work schedule on Wednesday was intense.

Threads: Twitter threatens to sue as 50 million sign up to Zuckerberg app

Threads, Threads, Threads. It’s all anyone wants to talk about this week.

And with good reason. It’s good. Really good.

The app appeared in the App Store ahead of launch, generating a surprising level of excitement from people who would usually be cynical about anything Meta does.

But given the supreme level of platform-trashing Elon Musk has been doing lately at Twitter (more on that below), it’s not a surprise that Zuck looks like the good guy here.

So will Threads be a long-term hit? 50 million users in its first day, along with 95 million posts and 190m+ likes suggests yes. It’s on track to become the fastest platform ever to hit 100 million users! Even politicians are already jumping on board.

It went straight to the top of the App Store charts (it was even top 5 in China, where Western social apps are banned).

But remember that the ease of signing up (it uses your Instagram account) coupled with the heavy media coverage of the launch means lots of people were bound to sign up out of curiosity.

Whether they’re still using it daily in six months’ time is the test. Still, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri sees launching Threads as a risky bet worth taking. Social media managers might not agree - all these new platforms can mean a lot more work.

Before Threads’ first day was over, Twitter had responded. First with a passive-aggressive “we’re often imitated” tweet, but then a legal letter threatening to sue Meta.

Meta’s response to suggestions it hired former Twitter engineers to build a rival? “That’s just not a thing”. Even if that’s not true, it might not matter.

And it looks like a stash of patents in Meta’s cupboard could be trouble for Twitter if Meta wanted to go nuclear.

Features: It’s a pretty bare-bones app, with lots of features still to come - including, yes, an edit button and a much-needed chronological feed. Just don’t expect ‘double tap to like’, with good reason.
Monetisation: There are no ads in Threads, and it seems there won’t be at least until next year. But advertisers are already intrigued.
Data collection: Based on its Apple App Store listing, there was lots of concern about Threads claiming lots of personal data. But even if Meta doesn’t already have all of yours (you’re already on Facebook and Instagram, right?), many other apps collect this data too - or more!
Missing EU: Don’t forget that the EU misses out on the party (for now) because US tech companies are wary of new competition rules there. That hasn’t stopped some users and brands finding ways in.
Deleting your account: Don’t want Threads after all? You currently can’t ditch it without deleting your Instagram account entirely. But that will change.
Mastodon compatibility: Support for the ActivityPub protocol is coming, meaning your Threads posts could turn up in apps like Mastodon in the future. Mastodon’s CEO reacted to the launch, aiming to calm fears from the platform’s most hardcore users about what Meta getting involved would mean. Alex Stamos has some useful thoughts on this too.

TweetDeck is falling apart after Twitter’s rate-limiting fiasco

You could call it “The slow sad death of Twitter”. Elon Musk turned up the heat on his apparent campaign to completely misunderstand everything about the platform he owns this week.

Over the weekend, users started seeing their feeds freezing up. It turned out it was deliberate - an attempt, Musk said, to stave off data scrapers. Even if that was true, putting harsh limits on your most avid readers’ use of the app is… a brave move.

Even staff were kept in the dark about the limits rolling out. There was speculation Twitter was DDOSing itself, while others thought it was just the latest attempt to cut costs at the platform.

Just like with Tesla cutting back on self-driving car sensors, thus making true full self-driving more difficult to achieve, Elon Musk is king of the false economy.

Eventually, a dry corporate blog post went up to address the issue, but it ignored the strength of users’ feelings.

And that was just part of the madness! As Geekout hit your inbox last week, news was breaking that Twitter had blocked logged-out visitors from viewing tweets or profiles. Another anti-scraping move, apparently, but again - one that reduces Twitter’s importance in the information landscape.

Twitter’s Google rankings plummeted, and the company has partially backtracked on the move.

Elon wasn’t done yet. There was more annoyance on the way for power users. API changes broke the old version of TweetDeck, forcing users over to the inferior new version. This new version, Twitter said, will become a Twitter Blue subscription feature next month. Pay for something worse? Smart business! 🤔

All of this jiggery-pokery has implications. Twitter is becoming less useful and less appealing to people who use it professionally

It all added up to an open goal for Twitter’s rivals. Spill reached number 1 in the App Store. Bluesky became so in demand, with record traffic, that it temporarily halted new user signups. Mastodon saw big growth too.

And of course, it was perfect timing for Meta to launch its own rival. Genius management, Elon. Genius.
